Graw Days Fall Festival, 2014
Come join us for our 2014 Graw Days Fall Festival, celebrating 102 years of racing history in Havre de Grace, Maryland. With a wide variety of delicious foods from local restaurants, live foot-stomping music all day, horse racing theme at this downtown Festival, with lots of kids games, artisans and craftspeople displaying their handicrafts and talents, historic presentations and displays, and our local merchants' doors swinging all day, we can say only one thing: Saturday, October 11th, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the 7th Annual
Graw Days Festival!
The Graw Days represent a colorful time in Havre de Grace's history beginning in 1912 with the construction of the Havre de Grace Racetrack, affectionately called "The Graw." The track was considered one of the best racing strips of the American turf and was the main training ground for owners who hoped to win the Kentucky Derby. It also made Havre de Grace a popular stop-off for travelers and gamblers up and down the East Coast.
The timeframe of the 2014 Graw Days Festival is the Roaring Twenties, the Dirty Thirties, and the
Fighting Forties, with period music, costumes, a wide variety of foods, outdoor cafe seating, historic displays and presentations in our History @ the Bank (located at the beautifully restored 1904 bank building, La Banque de Fleuve), and artists and craftspeople in booths along downtown streets closed to traffic.
Havre de Grace Main Street, Inc. draws thousands of visitors to this event, which will be held rain or shine. In keeping with the period, at the Old Opera House on Union Avenue, the Tidewater Players will present a 30 minutes musical revue through the decades from 1900 through the forties on the hour, throughout the day. Free admission.
Family-friendly daytime events take place downtown from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. In partnership with, local churches and businesses, Congress Avenue will be transformed into a children’s paradise with a variety of activities, period games and crafts for kids of all ages. In addition, there will be pony rides, face painting, moon bounces, balloon fun, and a special stage will be on the Children’s Street with live music and presentations just for children.
Horse-drawn carriages take visitors on tours of the downtown area, and special daytime tours on The Great American Trolley (from 10am to 5:30pm) of the old Graw clubhouse and other points of interest. Ride the trolley all day for just $1.00. Small-charge tickets for all rides, tours, and tournament style games will be sold at ticket booths throughout the festival as well as the Main Street pavilion on Pennington Avenue,
at the corner of St. John Street and Franklin Street, The Graw Days Classic and Antique Car show will be on display in the corner parking lot. Vehicles interested in participating in the show should contact the Main Street office (410-939-1811).
At the newly renovated and historically preserved La Banque de Fleuve, historic photographs of Havre de Grace and the heyday of the Graw Racetrack, horse racing history, racing silks and other racing tack will be on display. Also in our historic building will be the displays from the Heritage Museums of Havre de Grace/1812, Concord Point Lighthouse, and the Havre de Grace Historic Preservation Commission.
Also new this year will be an exhibit of art that has been “inspired” by the nostalgic period of the Graw Days (1912-1950). Here is the Call for Artists information; art will be exhibited by invitation only and on sale to the public both at the Bank as well as the Arts by the Bay Gallery.
